News from Representative Franson
This has been a really busy week again at the Capitol. We have been having very long floor sessions every day.
As I mentioned last week, the House passed the Tax Relief and Job Creation Act. This bill will greatly benefit Minnesota small businesses. We are waiting action by the Senate.
I also introduced a bill recently in regards to employers asking potential new hires for social media passwords. My bill, HF 2963, would prohibit employers from asking for these passwords. I don’t believe that asking for these passwords should be a requirement concerning employment. By asking for passwords the employer is invading the privacy of the social network user and the user’s friends.
This week the House has passed various bills, including Jacobs Law, the Game and Fish bill, Voter ID. The Governor did sign the permitting bill this week that will benefit Minnesota businesses and local governments, making the permitting process quicker. He also signed Jacobs Law on Wednesday. We have been working very hard here at the Capitol and it is my hope that the Governor will sign these common sense bills.
We went late into the night on Tuesday to pass the Voter ID bill. The question on the ballot this November will be, according to the bill: Shall the Minnesota Constitution be amended to require all voters to present valid photo identification on Election Day and that the state provide free identification to eligible voters?
This week is the last week my 2012 legislative survey will be available. It is my hope that you will participate if you haven’t already. This is a great way for me to hear from you! I will tabulate the results and send them out when the survey closes.
Calling all college students! Scitechsperience is an internship program that the House of Representatives helps to fund and is sponsored by the Minnesota Science and Technology Authority and Minnesota High Tech Association. It is a great program for higher education students studying science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Scitechsperience provides small and medium size businesses opportunities to hire interns with hopes of potentially hiring them on staff after graduation.
This program enables employers to teach specific skills to interns and helps to prepare them for future opportunities while also allowing companies to find future employees. This is a great way to prepare students and also allows companies opportunities to grow and expand in Minnesota.
If you know any students that would be interested in participating, this website will provide more information about eligibility and applications. www.mhta.org/work/scitechsperience-internships/
I hope everyone has a safe and blessed Easter. During the legislative recess, I will be back in the district next week. If anyone would like to meet with me, please contact my office to set up an appointment. I would be happy to talk with you about legislative issues of concern.
